How to Wear Your Summer Wardrobe This Winter
Gone are the days of tossing on your one-layer wear in winter; it’s time to show off your layering skills. Unpack those boxes of cosy clothes and try out several new combinations. “Layering is the key for successful transition of summer clothing into smart winter wardrobe,” says designer Aniket Satam. A well-layered outfit not only looks stylish but also makes your summer clothes last through winter. Stock up on knits, jackets and cardigans, and wear them over your favourite summer shirts and dresses. For an off-the-ramp look, try wearing long-sleeved shirts under dresses; turtlenecks under pinafores and shift dresses for a chic look during the cooler months.
Choose colours wisely
When it comes to winters, choose rich vibrant tones. “Light pastels don’t always work well, so think in terms of cool or blue-based, clear or pure colours, as well as dark, bright and icy colours with contrast,” says designer Shouger Merchant Doshi. Try solids or simple patterns with a few colours instead of complex busy patterns with many colours. Go for fabrics with refined finishes rather than textured surfaces, preferably wool or polished cotton. Avoid orange, golden browns, camel, off-white, and any yellow-based colours.
Bring on the boots
Switching your footwear plays a major part in giving your summer outfit a winter twist. Bid goodbye to sandals and peep-toes, and welcome your pumps and lace-up shoes. Keep the look high fashion by teaming socks with statement heels! Winter is also the favourite season for boot lovers. Just add a pair of boots and a cardigan to your favourite summer dress for a weather-appropriate look.
Tone down your florals
You need not completely neglect your floral-printed clothing in winter. The key is to stick to darker floral prints, as they blend in more easily with your winter wardrobe. Also, choose your fabric and cut wisely. “Strictly avoid floral patterns in cotton and linen; instead opt for something in rich satin, plush cashmere, or velvet,” says fashion designer Mrunal Yangad. Long sleeves and a less-than-risqué hemline will help you balance the effect of breezy florals.
Update your accessories
Simply changing your accessories can go a long way in updating your look. Cold weather is perfect for wearing a luxe pashmina and when the temperature drops further, you can opt for a stylish muffler or make a statement with a fur stole. Moreover, switch those cotton jholas and canvas bags for lush suede or knitted ones. Hats and wool caps are a handy accessory that you can take with you into the winter months. Just like sunglasses and other accessories, even hats compliment your facial shape. If you have a round or square facial shape, choose a hat that has a low profile and straight brim. For a long face, choose a low profile hat with a wide brim. For an oval face, every style of hat works.
You can still show skin
It’s not that you have to be covered from head to toe during the winter season. You can still wear those short skirts and dresses and flaunt your sexy legs. But make sure you do it the right way! Keep the ratio of skin to clothes balanced. Show off your skin, but wear a few layers on top to block out the breeze.
Winter is the most ideal time for wearing leather or thicker fabrics. Add a leather jacket over your favourite summer look, or try teaming your favourite
summer separates with a leather top or skirt.
