Porn went mainstream in India: 2012
Does Bollywood bring about social change in the country? It could be argued that it does, despite frequently producing mindless escapist fare. Films like Taare Zameen Par and Peepli (Live) have covered diverse issues like dyslexia and farmer suicides.
But, what about change of a different kind? Where it may not be socially relevant but it does push the boundaries of art in a sense? Well, this year we noticed a trend in pornography becoming a little more accepted in the Indian mainstream. It may still be a taboo in most people’s minds, but we are beginning to see films that openly feature stories based on this form of entertainment.
Sunny Leone
History was made this year when a recognized adult entertainer played the lead role in a mainstream Bollywood film. Sunny Leone, who is of Indian descent, starred in Pooja Bhatt’s Jism 2, where she played the character of Izna, a porn actress.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, who noted that the film featured rather tame sex scenes. It was a start though, and Sunny Leone looks forward to acting in more films in Bollywood.
Sherlyn Chopra
Sherlyn Chopra also made history this year by becoming the first Indian woman to pose nude for Playboy magazine. She has also become a minor Twitter celebrity, gaining a lot of voyeuristic followers after she began posting titillating pictures of herself.
She will appear in the upcoming erotic film Kamasutra 3D, which is said to be a French-Indian co-production.
Poonam Pandey
Poonam Pandey has not acted in any film so far, but she is already a household name. After promising to strip if the Indian cricket team won the World Cup, she shot to fame and has managed to keep herself in the limelight by actively growing a fanbase on Twitter. Like Sherlyn, she has also gained many voyeuristic followers who have watched her document even the most mundane parts of her daily life in a scantily-clad fashion.
Poonam has also signed on for a film called Nasha, though it is not known if it will be an erotic film. Amit Saxena, director of Jism 1, will direct Nasha, which is said to have ‘bold’ and ‘intense’ scenes.
Rozlyn Khan
The online pornographic comic Savita Bhabhi, which got banned in India, is reportedly being made into a film. Director Ram Gopal Varma is said to be interested in making this film and will star Rozlyn Khan in the lead role.
Can Savita Bhabhi get a faithful film adaptation without getting censored, or worse, banned in India? Only time will tell. For now it is certain that adult entertainment has certainly entered Indian consciousness like never before.
